Understanding the Difference Between Chemical Sunscreen and Mineral Sunscreen

When it comes to protecting your skin from the sun, not all sunscreens are created equal. One of the most common questions we’re asked at Peachfur's is: What’s the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreen—and which one is best for me?

Let’s break it down in simple terms, so you can make the best choice for your skin.

What is Chemical Sunscreen?

Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays before they can penetrate the skin. They act like a sponge, converting UV light into heat and releasing it from the body.

This type of sunscreen uses ingredients like avobenzone, octinoxate, oxybenzone, or octocrylene to do its job. It’s typically lightweight, invisible on the skin, and blends easily—making it a popular choice for daily wear and under makeup.

However, chemical sunscreen needs about 15 to 20 minutes to become effective after application. It’s a great choice for those with medium to darker skin tones or anyone who prefers a more seamless finish.

Peachfur's Top Tip: Always apply chemical sunscreen to clean, dry skin before heading out.

What is Mineral (Physical) Sunscreen?

Mineral sunscreens work differently. Instead of absorbing UV rays, they reflect them—acting like a shield on the skin’s surface. The two most common active ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Mineral sunscreen starts working immediately after application. It’s ideal for sensitive skin, rosacea, children, and anyone who have had aesthetic treatments, as it’s less likely to cause irritation.

The texture tends to be thicker than chemical formulas, and it can sometimes leave a white cast—though newer versions are often tinted or more sheer for better blending.

Another Top Tip: Look for “non-nano” zinc oxide formulas if you’re after an eco-conscious, reef-safe choice.

So... Which Sunscreen is Best for You?

If your skin is sensitive, acne-prone, or you’ve recently had a facial or treatment, mineral sunscreen may be your best option. If you want something lightweight and invisible under makeup, a chemical sunscreen will suit your routine perfectly. For those seeking reef-safe protection, mineral sunscreens are often the better option.

The truth is, the best sunscreen is simply the one you’ll use consistently. Daily sun protection is essential—not just in summer, but all year round.
